Over 65s, as well as those who have to leave their homes for work, will also now be eligible for a test, along with those working on the frontline in health and social care, key workers, patients in the NHS and residents and staff in care homes.
Anyone who has symptoms and lives with someone who meets any of the aforementioned criteria can also be tested.
Hancock told the Downing Street press briefing: “From construction workers to emergency plumbers, from research scientists to those in manufacturing, the expansion of access to testing will protect the most vulnerable and help keep people safe.”
It comes as the government has pledged to carry out 100,000 tests a day by the end of April.
According to the latest figures, the government has managed to carry out 43,563 in the 24 hours up to 09:00 on 28 April.
So how can you get a Covid-19 test?
In order to apply for a test, visit the government website here.
Once you have successfully applied for a test, you will either be provided with a home testing kit, or you can visit one of the drive-through centers.
If you or a loved one already have acute symptoms or are worried, the advice is to call the 111 non-emergency NHS helpline.
If symptoms are severe, calling 999 for an emergency is still an option.
Where are the drive-through centers?
The government has set up 43 regional testing centers. Once you have applied, if your request is approved, you will be asked to fill out personal details and receive an email or text inviting you to book a test.
You will then be able to choose an appointment at your local drive-through test site.
Below is a list of the areas where drive-through centers have been set up.
The Department of Health and Social Care is currently also providing support for 18 satellite testing sites in Ashton-Under-Lyne, Bexhill, Bognor Regis, Bradford, Chesterfield, Chester, Derby, Stockport, Halifax Huddersfield, Lincolnshire, Liverpool, Manchester, Mid Cheshire, Blackburn, Sandwell, Wakefield and Kendal.
How do I access a home test kit?
If you do not have a car, you will be offered a home test, including swabs and instructions.
