How Can I Obtain Write Permission Using Mac Os X For Files Stored On My External Hard Drive

I only have “permission” to read files on my external hard drive. I am not allowed to write or edit files on the hard drive when using Mac OS. The only solution I have found is to format the drive with the Mac OS.

Is there any easier option to change the drive’s “Sharing & Permissions”?
