I have Dell inspiron n5010.

I have tried using Task Scheduler, but I guess it works for laptop which are on standby and not which are shut down. I used two or three programs also, but nothing worked.

I want something like:

  1. I shut down my laptop at night after setting the alarm time.

  2. It starts on its own and plays a song.

You can keep the computer on and plugged in all night with the top shut:

Go to control panel and go to hardware and sound. Then click power options. Select ‘choose what closing the lid does’ on the left sidebar. Select the choice you want and keep your computer plugged in all night. Then the alarm will turn on without the computer ever turning on or off

There’s a lot of different terminology that hardware manufacturers use to refer to hibernation in BIOS. Look for anything in your BIOS that refers to sleep states and enable it. Hibernation is commonly referred to as S4, but your manufacturer could refer to it as any number of names. Some boards have a wake feature, others may not. Just make sure S4 or sleep is enabled. Or ACPI. It may be enabled by default on your computer.

Once you have enabled it in BIOS, if at all, you need to turn hibernate on in your operating system. It’s pretty easy. Just go to power management and it should be in a tab in the PM menu.

how to turn this option ON in BIOS. I searched through the options but only new thing i figured out was “USB Wake Support”.

Is there any special keyword that i should search? RTC Alert was not there.

I would study about this POE (Power Over Ethernet) and try to use it.

Clock Timer

You may use the good old clock timer (for the power supply) available at your local electronics dealer. That works in every case. E.g. configure the clock timer for power on at 8.00 in the morning. The computer boots up and everything else is done by sitekiosk. Then configure a shut down time in SiteKiosk for e.g. 17.55 and the clock timer to power off at 18.00 o´clock. Just set the time switch in a way that it will power off the computer a few minutes later.BIOS

Some motherboards with modern BIOS allow you to set up a time when the computer is turned on. You can reach these settings through the BIOS-setup. (Option “RTC Alert”)

This option provides nothing else but the automatic startup at a specific time. However, after an automatic start, the COM1 port will not be available yet. In this case, you might want to build in a Fritz! Card PCI if you are using a modem on that port.

Another option would be to set up POE (Power Over Ethernet) for you computer (if it is support with your hardware). And set a task to run from your home computer (or any computer that is on at that time) everyday at a specific time that would turn your computer on. This will only work if your home computer is on at that time though.

There is a great all around alarm clock that I bookmarked called Kuku Klok. You must set the clock when your online, but once it is set it works offline and in sleep mode. It has a variety of sounds to use, I favor the “can’t get them up in the morning” bugle call, but there is a rooster, new age sounds, about a half dozen. You may preview the sound before setting the time. Once the wake up time is set, all you can change is to cancel it. Here is the site:

Hey that is an awesome idea and I got it, I am so happy these things exist, I always used my cell  phone but I am offshore now and they wrap it up so we can’t take pictures, so I am with out a alarm clock.

Once you have the song in .WAV form, open Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, and go to the Sounds tab. Under Program Events, find the entry for Start Windows and select the .WAV file you want to play in the list box at the bottom of the dialog.
